Blue Mountain-A great place for a fun getaway!

This past weekend we packed up the car and headed on out to Blue Mountain. The ride up to the the Blue Mountain area was beautiful with lots of animals, windmills and brightly coloured trees for the kid's to look at.

Check in was quick, under 5 minutes which was great because the kids wanting to run around and explore the Village.   The Village is so pretty! In the Blue Mountain Village there are several lodges to stay at.  On the lower floors of these buildings are many stores and restaurants.

Where did we stay?  We stayed  in the Seasons at Blue Village suite.
What was our room like?  We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite.
The kitchen had all the necessities including dishware and cutlery
Gas fireplace, TV and DVD player

Bedroom with door to bathroom and a large closet

Pull-out couch and dining area
The room was clean and we made use of the fridge, dishware, dishwasher, oven and coffee pot.  The mattress on the pull-out couch was not the comfiest.  I would recommend going with the 2 bedroom suite if you are traveling with more than 2 people.   Mattress and pillows on the bed were O.K. and Money Saving Dad and I slept well after our busy adventure filled days.

Shortly after arriving we went down to Crock A Doodle to paint some pottery.  We had a great time!  It was very relaxing to just sit there and paint.  Money Saving Dad was a bit hesitant about painting pottery but it turned out to be something he really enjoyed.  Needless to say the girls enjoyed the chance to show their craftiness.
There are many items you can choose to paint from mugs to pet food bowls.  You can check out the Crock A Doodle website here.  (Crock a doodle does birthday parties too!)
Some of the many pottery choices available
Concentrating!

Once we were finished at Crock a Doodle we had a bit of time to walk around the Blue Mountain Village and explore very important things like Starbucks for a Pumpkin Spice Latte, Jack and Maddy's Toy Store and the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

We decided to eat at The Firehall Pizza Company.

We were all a bit cold from exploring the Village and sitting near the pizza oven not only smelled great but the warmth was welcomed too!  We purchased the special 2 for $23.  We chose the Margherita pizza and Jambalaya Fettuccine which were both excellent.

After supper we purchased a few sugary treats from The Happy Valley Candy Co and relaxed in our room.  Early to bed to get ready for our canoeing adventure the next morning!

We woke up bright and early the next morning and headed on over to the Sunset Grill for a hearty breakfast.

Next we were off to meet up with Matt, one of the owners of Free Spirit Tours.  We were booked in for a 1 hour canoe down the Beaver River and we were all looking forward to it.   We have canoed before and this was a really easy paddle appropriate for beginners and kids.

We were thinking that 1 hour was going to be too long for the kids but when we were approaching the end everyone wished we had booked the 2 hour session!  It was a beautiful trek down the river with lots of wild life to see.  We followed a Blue Heron all the way down the river and met up with about 200 geese!

If you live in the area or planning a visit and would like some adventure definitely look up Free Spirit Tours.
They offer 1 and 2 hour canoe trips down the Beaver River, Caving and Climbing at Metcalfe Rock, paddling the Nottawasaga River, Sea Kayaking at Northwinds Beach and  Hiking along the Bruce Trail.  They also offer Corporate events and Kid's Camps for ages 7-16.

After our canoeing we were famished.  We headed down the road to the Blue Mountain Gourmet Bake Shop
We purchased a peach pie and a chicken pot pie for dinner which were both excellent!
YUM!
After dinner it was time to pick up our pottery.  We were delighted at how they turned out and will remember this fun trip every year when we hang them on our tree.
Now off to Plunge!  Not to many picture of Plunge! because we were all swimming and in the hot tub.

After spending a few hours at Plunge!  it was time to go back to our room, finish our chicken and peach pies and call it a night.

The next morning we headed down to the Village market for coffee and bagels.   Once breakfast was done we had a bit of time to walk around before heading home.    If you have a chance to visit the area please check out the following website for information on the Apple Pie Trail
for fun activities in the area.  If you are looking for a lodging package and things to do in Blue Mountain visit bluemountian.ca .  Under lodging you will find available "Hot Deals" and "Lodging Packages".

Review-5 Ingredient Fix by Claire Robinson

If you follow my blog regularly you know that my family loves to cook so we were excited to receive Clarie Robinson's book for a review.  Yes, even an avid cook needs ideas for quick, healthy, flavorful meals too.

I devoured (pun intended) the book in one night!  The book is divided into several sections-

Up & At Em' (breakfast)
It's 5:00 Somewhere (Cocktails & Nibbles for parties or anytime)
Opening Act(Appetizers to start your engine)
All Day Eats (Soup & salads to tide you over)
The Main Event(Impressive entrees)
Sidekicks(Vegetable dishes to dress up any plate)
Comfort a la cart(Pasta, Potatoes, and other perfect plate fillers)
Sweet Endings(Wrap It All up with Dessert)

The recipes themselves are explained in a clear step-by-step manner that anyone can follow.  Since there are only 5 ingredients per recipe there are no long, drawn out directions to follow.  The dishes are quick ,healthy and  tasty.  Making homemade food does not have to be expensive, involved a lot of ingredients or take a lot of time.

A few of the recipes we tried were the Homemade Maple Breakfast Sausage, Spiced apple oatmeal, Potato Bar soup and Brussels Sprouts Gratin.  They all turned out wonderfully and I think they will be returning favorites on our table.

The thing that is great about this book is that the recipes have 5 ingredients but are far from boring.  Smoked Salmon & Pumpernickel Strata,  Fig and Blue Cheese Tart, Fresh Pea Ravioli with Crispy Prosciutto, yummy.  It sounds fancy and complicated but they are all 5 ingredients dishes!

Claire Robinson can also be found on the FoodNetwork.  We love her show!

Moving? Be sure to price out your move!

Ah, moving.  Just the mere mention of the word sends chills down my spine.

I have a few questions for you-
Are you moving?
Are you hiring movers?
If you are hiring movers, did you price out a few to find the best deal or just go with the first one you called?
Did you know that you can check out moving companies online?  It makes the process quick, easy and painless.  We all know when it's moving time there are few things you are usually short of- Money, time and patience.

For my Canadian readers you can check out sites like canada-movers.ca, moveit.ca or moving.ca.  For my American readers you can get moving quotes here.  If you are moving in the San Fransisco area click here for local SF movers.  Click here for  Fresno movers.

Moving company sites usually have other useful info like:
-Packing tips
-Where and what to get for packing supplies
-Info about car, international, self and office moving.

A few tips from me-
-Make sure you have ample packing supplies
-If you can, set up a play date for your kids while you are packing.  It makes it so much easier and productive
-Pack up things you won't be using before your move and have them ready to go.  It makes for less to do at the last minute. If it's May and you are moving in August pack up all of your winter clothes boots, holiday decorations ect early.
-Label, Label, Label!  Write on the box what it is and what room it goes in.  This way it makes it easier to unpack.
-Get rid of the clutter!  Get rid of anything you are not using.

Happy Moving!
