Wonder+ Simply Free & A Great Meal Idea

This summer sure is going by quickly. When I was a kid I always hated when the first week of August came because that meant only one more month until school started!

July has been so hot; hopefully August is a bit cooler. I have been relying on my barbecue for most of my meals so I don’t heat up my kitchen. When ground beef is on sale I like to make up a bunch of meatballs and freeze them for easy, quick meals. I cook them in the crock pot with spaghetti sauce and serve with pasta or with sweet and sour sauce served with rice.

I came across this recipe for pineapple meatball skewers from Canadian Living and knew it would be a hit with my family. Grilled pineapple and peppers are awesome and meatballs are a family favourite. I'll add a big romaine salad, some bean salad and grilled veggies to complete our barbecue.

The new Wonder+ SimplyFree hotdog buns are a perfect vessel for these tasty kabobs. Wonder+ SimplyFree is the first Canadian National Brand of bakery products free of artificial preservatives, flavours and colours; it is also free of high fructose corn syrup and made with unbleached wheat flour.
Photo:Canadian Living

Ingredients
18 frozen prepared meatballs, thawed
1 cup (250 mL) pineapple chunks (1/2 inch/1 cm thick)
1 cup (250 mL) sweet pepper chunks (green, red or yellow)
6 tbsp (90 mL) pineapple or plum sauce (approx)
6 Wonder+ SimplyFree hotdog buns
Preparation:
Thread 3 meatballs, pineapple chunks and pepper chunks alternately onto each of six 6-inch (15 cm) soaked wooden skewers. Brush each with 1 tbsp (15 mL) pineapple sauce.

Place skewers on greased grill over medium heat; close lid and grill, turning once, until heated through, 4 to 6 minutes. Brush with more sauce if desired.

Place skewer onto buns; grab and pull to remove skewer.

Makes 6 servings.
Additional Information:
• Tip: Use any frozen cooked meatballs, such as Swedish or Italian. Thaw in microwave for a minute or two. Get the kids to help make the skewers. For grown-up palates, add sweet onion pieces or small mushrooms.

Disclosure – I am participating in the Wonder+ SimplyFree program by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Weston Bakeries.  I received a gift card and free product coupons as a thank you for my participation.  The opinions on this blog are my own.

Virtual Course #6 Coupon Organization

Here is the next Virtual Course about coupon organization from WeUseCoupons.com run by Nathan aka Mr Coupon from the TLC Show Extreme Couponing. US info but a lot of it is relevant to Canada too. I purchased a binder just like the one in the video below at Zellers.

*********************************************************************************
Organizing and cutting coupons can be one of the most challenging tasks to do in saving money.

There is no right way as long as you are organized in your own way!
Here are a few great ways:

  1. Bins - use index cards as labels for each product type
  2. Binder - similar to bins but coupons are placed in baseball card size sheets :
  3. File Folder - don't cut any, just organize inserts by date -must be really organized for this one as you will need to know which insert the coupon came in to find it!
Things that don't work:
  • Tossing them in your purse/wallet - bad plan you will forget
  • Cutting them - putting them in drawer - again you will forget

I use the bin method as I have a lot of coupons. Every Sunday I sit down with all the ads I am interested in. Then, I have a zipper pencil folder for each store I shop in. Each zipper folder is a different color and see through. The zipper folders are stored in a 3 ring binder.

I then determine what is on sale at each store and put it in the appropriate zipper folder. I only bring that zipper folder into the store (so I don't lose all my coupons. (things happen).

Of course if I find something on sale that maybe was not listed in the ad, I just run out to the car to get the rest of my coupons!

Works like a charm. I have tried all the ways above and I have found this is what works for me.

Try a few of them out and see what you think.

Here's to better organization!

An Easy Summer Meal

As most of you know I also blog for General Mills over at LifeMadeDelicious.ca. Here is my latest post featuring a quick and easy meal idea.

The kids have been on summer break for a month  now and I have spent most of my time keeping them occupied.  We visit the local library a few times a week and participate in several of the programs they have going on.  The great thing is that the programs are free and the library is air conditioned, thank goodness.  We have also visited our local conservation areas for swimming and fishing.  We have a season pass which is really inexpensive and we sure do use it a lot.

Summer fun is great but.....It's really hot out there!  I must admit that when it gets this hot the last thing I want to do is stand over a hot stove or turn on the oven.  When the hot weather finally arrives I pick one day out of the week to get meals ready and the rest of the week is a breeze.

Some things I do are:
  • -Wash and cut up fruits and veggies for the week
  • -Cook ground meat and freeze for tacos and taco salad
  • -Prepare a large batch of beans salad, cut up romaine or coleslaw to last for a few days
  • -Season and grill a few chicken breasts to use in wraps and to add to salad.
  • -Use a crock pot to make sweet and sour meatballs (serve with precooked rice)
  • -Precook a large amount of brown rice and freeze into family size batches.  It's quick to thaw in the microwave.
Let’s not forget about foods to cool us off!  We make homemade Popsicle using fresh fruits, juice and yogurt.  Once in a while I'll add some Betty Crocker Fruit Shapes to our homemade Popsicle for an extra special treat.

Here is a great recipe that will take only a few minutes to whip together using frozen precooked rice and precooked seasoned chicken.
Chicken Fried Rice with Peas
 Chicken Fried Rice with Peas
Ingredients:
2 cups (500 mL) uncooked converted brown rice
Water
1 tbsp (15 mL) oil
3/4 lb (375 g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups (500 mL) Green Giant* Frozen SWEETLETS* PEAS or Summer Sweet Peas or 1 can (14 oz/398 mL) SWEETLETS* PEAS or Summer Sweet Peas, drained
1/3 cup (75 mL) sliced green onions
1/4 cup (50 mL) soy sauce
2 tsp (10 mL) sesame oil
1/4 tsp (1 mL) cayenne pepper
Method:
  • Cook rice in water as directed on package. Set aside.
  • In large non-stick skillet heat oil over medium-high heat; stir fry chicken until no longer pink inside, about 5 minutes.
  • Add red pepper and garlic; stir fry over medium heat 3 minutes. Add cooked rice, frozen peas (if using canned peas stir in for last 2 minutes of cooking), green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil and cayenne pepper; stir fry until hot, about 5 minutes.

Couponing Class #5 What does Coupon Lingo mean?

Since TLC Extreme Couponing has taken off this is one of the things I am emailed about most.

Consumers are aggressively seeking coupons to save money since the show aired. But........do you know how to use coupons correctly? If you don't know how read this and learn how to maximize your savings.

I always combine coupons with sales to maximize my savings. A great example is Purex laundry soap. When I signed up for the free sample they sent me a $3 coupon with the sample. Purex was on sale for $3 so all it cost was a bit for the tax. I sure was glad I hung on to the coupon waiting for the right sale!

Read below about what coupon lingo means and maximize your savings.

Question 1
You can't use a coupon for something that is on sale can you?

Answer: Yes, you most certainly can!

Question #2
I have this coupon that says "can not be used with any other offer". Does that mean I can't use the coupon when the item is on sale?

Answer: You can most definitely use the coupon when the item is on sale. Can not be used with any other offer means that you can only use one coupon and not "Stack" or use multiple coupons for each individual item.

Example If you were purchasing 2 bottles of shampoo and your coupon said "not to be used with any other offer" you could use 1 coupon per bottle.

Question #3
My coupon says " limit 1 per purchase". Does that mean if I purchase 3 items I can only use 1 coupon?

Answer:
No, 1 per purchase means that you can use 1 coupon per each item.

Example If you are shopping and buy seven items each of those items is it's own purchase so you are making seven "purchases". All of these purchases combined make up a Transaction.

Question #4
My Coupon says "Limit, 1 per transaction" or "One coupon per customer". What does that mean?

Answer: This means you can only use 1 coupon for your transaction. If I have a coupon that says this and I want to use 2 coupons I would complete my transaction then have my husband make a separate transaction.

If you have any other Canadian coupon questions please leave them in the comments below.

This is why they scour the world to find you the best polish (well, maybe that's a bit extreme, but once, on vacation, one of our employees found some polish he knew our customers would love so he had a large shipment of them sent to our office).

Most of the orders ship next day and shipping is always free on orders over $29. Because polish is so exciting they work hard to get you your order fast so you're not left longing for your new color (that can be torture)!

They carry many popular brands including Essie, China Glaze, CND and Color Club. We know what's hip and which collections are coming out. We work hard to get all the fabulous collections so you don't have to scour 50 salons to see if they have your favorite colour.

Extreme Couponing Class #4- Is it really worth it to buy things with coupons?

Here is this Friday's Extreme Couponing Class-Is it really worth it to buy things with coupons? Brought to you by WeUseCoupons.com (Owned by Nathan aka Mr Coupon on TLC Extreme Couponing)

Today's class is written by Laura, a WeUseCoupons.com Moderator. Remember, she is in the US. All of the info below is applicable to Canada except for double coupons and clipping services.

Thanks Laura!

“Is it really worth it to buy things with coupons?”

I get that question quite often from friends, family members, and even complete strangers in the stores.

My answer usually astonishes them because I tell them "yes and no." I think they were looking for me to say unequivocally... YES!

If you read through my hints and tips article you will see that I mentioned “comparing prices”. Some times using a coupon does not make the item cheaper than the store brand or generic brand. So you should be observant of that.

BUT…

There is a method to using coupons effectively.

Here are a few more tips.

1. Know your store’s coupon policy.

Does your store double coupons? If so, to what amount and are there any limits on how many of the same coupon/or like item you can purchase in one order?

Example: Let’s say the Canned Dole Pineapple is $1.50 and your store will double that .50 off coupon. You just reduced your cost to .50 for that item and it does indeed end up costing less than the generic brand for which you don’t have a coupon for.

Ask the stores if they double coupons if you don’t know if they do or not. Some don't but many stores do. Remember though, just because a store doubles coupons doesn't mean you're going to get the best deal with your coupon there. We'll get to that in a minute.
(MSCM- also find out if your store takes printable coupons. A lot in Canada don't)

Watch your sales and DON’T stick to just one store for all your needs.

Being “store loyal” can be a detriment to your wallet.

Watch the store sale ads and put your coupons to double work by using that coupon on the sale item to make it even lower in price. Once you get to shopping around, you’ll notice that what may be $2.49 at Walmart may actually be $1.99 at your regular grocery store and if you have a double coupon store, your cost can be even lower. And that's what I allured to in #1... Know your prices. Keep a price book if necessary on the items you buy frequently. BUT don’t rush out to use those coupons immediately.

SEE #3 below.

3. Hold ‘Em.

Just because you have it doesn’t mean you have to use it immediately.

Hold on to those coupons because the stores know in advance what coupons are coming out in the Sunday inserts and they put those items on sale. That sale price is not the lowest sale price that will be on that item before those coupons expire. Usually the week that the coupon expires is when that item will go on sale for it’s lowest price. (Or at least that has been my experience over the years.)

4. Buying in multiples.

When you find a good deal and you have coupons for the items, buy more than one (up to the store’s limit if there is one). This is commonly called stockpiling.

You can get extras of coupons by asking friends and family to save the coupon inserts for you, order them online for a small shipping and handling charge from places like The Coupon Clippers, Coupons & Things By Dede, and The Coupon Master. Of course, if you're a daring individual - scope out the paper recycling bins for extra inserts.... just be sure to ask someone before you do as many areas are not allowing this to be done now.
(MSCM- The above is US info only. I do not know of any clipping service in Canada. I get extra coupons from family, friends and neighbors)

By buying multiples of items, I am:
  1. Less likely to run out before the next sale which means I don’t have to pay full price.
  2. Have a readily available stock so I’m not having to make special trips to the stores for an item.
  3. I have things on hand to make quick baskets as gifts for someone or be able to donate to someone who may either be sick, out of work, or house burned, etc.
5. Get acquainted.

Get to know your store’s policy, upcoming sale ads, Good Deal Alerts (GDA), and much more by frequently reading online forums that cater to people who wish to save money with coupons, sales, etc.

6. Make a List. Now that you have the coupons in hand and the sale flyers, go through each one and make a list of the “best deals” you can use then match them accordingly to coupons while keeping in mind #3 above.

7. Don’t be brand loyal.

We all probably have our favorites when it comes to an item. My husband prefers Heinz ketchup but we rarely get coupons for that but he will compromise with me if I have a coupon for another brand of ketchup that makes it cost less than his favorite brand. By being “brand flexible” I have more leeway to save with the coupons than if I was to stick to one brand.

So “Is it really worth it to buy things with coupons?”

Yes and no.

Yes you can save a lot of money by using coupons BUT at the same time, if you're buying something just because you have a coupon or don't need the item.. then no that's not really saving you money. If you are diligent and observant, you can get your main toiletry items free after coupons. Items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, razors, etc. can usually be gotten for free or for pennies.

Stock up when you find those time deals ... even if it's enough to get you through until the next sale cycle on those things comes back around. I don't know about you but I think the health & beauty items alone really rack up a grocery bill in a hurry if you're not using coupons for them.
