Free Halloween Pumpkin Stencils

When I was a kid, carved pumpkins were all pretty similar. A carved pumpkin usually had 2 triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a big grin. If you wanted to get fancy, a few crooked teeth or a round nose made with a hole saw was top of the list.

When making the rounds trick or treating It was the norm back then to see houses with 1 large pumpkin maybe two at the most.  Nowadays it seems that most houses have between 2-5, 1 for each person to carve.

I think more carved pumpkins is a good thing because:
  • It's a pretty inexpensive family fun activity
  • The more pumpkins, the more seeds to eat!
  • I think it's fun to see other people's creations
I guess it was when I was a teen that pumpkin carving kits and stencils first made their appearance on store shelves. The problem with these kits was that they included a limited selection of paper templates which were good for one use. Boy, have things changed! There are multitudes of free printable stencils available on the net.

The free printable stencils vary in technical difficulty from a basic style to a wow style. I think some of the more advanced templates use a dremel tool to carve.

If you would like to give a pumpkin carving stencil a try on your pumpkin this year here are a few sites that offer free printable jack-o-lantern stencils

Disney Halloween Pumpkin Stencils  These include characters like Phineaus and Ferb, Disney Princess, Winnie the Pooh, Kermit the Frog, Cars, Monsters Inc and Tinkerbell

Nick Jr Pumpkin Stencils  Templates of 18 of your favourite Nick Jr characters including Blues Clues and Deigo.

Kraft Canada Pumpkin Stencils  6 different pumpkin faces

Pumpkin Masters Pumpkin Stencils 4 available here and you can get more by liking them on Facebook.

General Mills Spooktacular Pumpkin stencils 7 available including Buzz (Honey Nut Cheerios bee) and Trix the rabbit.  You need to register to access the templates

M&M/Mars Pumpkin Stencils 10 different templates available here.

Good luck with your pumpkin carving.  The only problem I see is choosing just one stencil!

A Clear Way to Straight Teeth-Invisalign Teen

BRACES Did I get your attention? Today I'm going to tell you about my experience with braces, what I am going through right now with my daughter and about a new product called Invisalign teen.

Back in the {ahem} 1980's I got braces.  I absolutely dreaded it.  I remember my mom telling me that it wouldn't be that bad and I was getting the new "mini" braces.  I'm not sure who coined the phrase mini braces but mini they were not.

I had difficulty coping with the braces for the next 2 1/2 years.  I remember the week or so of pain after adjustments and the frustration of trying to thread the floss thought the wire so I could floss at night.  I also required several emergency appointments.  These appointments were due to popped wires with sharp edges needing to be covered in wax until my parents could make the half hour drive to the Orthodontist.  I missed eating corn on the cob and popcorn (taffy, gum, and caramel....When I was a kid, these things were their own food group!)
Then it happened;  I got headgear.  The self consciousness pre-teen feelings every girl experiences were much worse having a wire strapped to my face.  Boys would follow me making horse noises because it looked like a horse bit.  I don't think I've seen anyone wearing headgear for at least 15+ years, things must have improved.

All I can tell you is that I was so glad to get the braces off 1 week before my grade 9 school pictures. I smiled huge for that first yearbook picture!
Here's Me in the Middle with friends Sandra, left and Diana(T.O. Teacher Mom)
Here's me now, I always smile big and I get complimented about my teeth so in the long run, it was worth it. (Photo courtesy of Jennifer Gilbert, NaturallyBeautifulPhotography.com)

My daughter's teeth(1 year ago)
My daughter has finished up with her bridge expander because her teeth were very crowded.  Since she still has a lot of growing to do and her jaw will get wider we are in a "wait and see" game.  She has to go back to get a check up in a few weeks and we'll go from there.

I wish Invisalign was available when I was going through the "braces years".  If you haven't heard about Invisalign here's a bit about it.
  • Invisalign Teen is a clear teeth aligner.  Treatment involves working your way through a series of aligners to gradually straighten your teeth. (usually 8-30 aligners are required)
  • Invisalign aligners are fully removable making eating and brushing much easier.
  • The new Invisalign Teen has built in compliance indicators that turn from blue to clear as the aligner is worn.  No fooling Mom with this!
  • Invisalign Teen comes with 6 free replacements because they know what teens are like.
  • Invisalign Teen aligners are durable and can be worn while playing sports
  • Invisalign Teen can correct over crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, crossbite, overbite and underbite
  • Fewer appointments are needed and their are no emergency appointments for broken brackets or popped wires
  • The cost of Invisalign varies patient to patient.  In most cases it is comparable with traditional braces.

Hamburger Helper Switchup and Giveaway

When I was a kid dinner time was always a battle. My mother would sometimes have to make two different dinners to please everyone. No, it wasn't me, I swear! My brother and sister are two of the pickiest eaters I know.

A meal my Mom would put on the table that would please everyone was Hamburger Helper.  It was usually potato stroganoff , beef noodle and sometimes lasagne.
I make Hamburger Helper once in a while for my family but I always jazz it up.   That's just how I roll.   Have you ever tried adding Chinese 5 spice and a bag of Green Giant Valley Selections Stir Fry Medley to Salisbury Hamburger Helper or adding salsa, green peppers and onions to Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper?  It switches up an ordinary week night meal into a,"Hey Mom, can I have more?" meal.

I tried out something different for my family recently.  I made meatloaf and a rice side dish using Cheesy Enchilada Hamburger Helper.
I combined 2lbs lean ground beef with 1/2 of the packet of Cheesy Enchilada seasoning, ketchup, eggs, breadcrumbs, onions and chopped peppers.  I baked them in a muffin tin and topped them with Old El Paso salsa. (I also served salsa on the side)

While the meatloaf was baking I cooked the rice that came in the Hamburger Helper box.  Once the rice was cooked,  I added some of the Cheesy Enchilada Hamburger Helper seasoning, 1/2 can of drained and rinsed black beans, Old El Paso Salsa, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, chopped green onions and 3 kinds of peppers.  To round out the meal we had Green Giant cut green beans on the side.

Would you like to win a fantastic Hamburger Helper prize?  I thought so!

Contest is open until November 22/2011
The prize is 3 boxes of Hamburger Helper, 3 free product coupons for Green Giant vegetables and a skillet to create your Hamburger Helper creation.  (Prize valued at $60)  You can enter this contest on multiple blogs but you can only win once.
To enter please do the mandatory entry first.  Make sure to include a way to contact you if you win(email, twitter ect) If I can't contact you, you can't win.

Mandatory entry- Tell me how you switch up your Hamburger Helper

How to Make a Smurf Hat and costume

Is there a little one running around your house singing LA...LA.... LALALALA? If you do then you know all about the Smurfs. This year my daughter wants to be Smurfette for Halloween so I thought I would make the costume myself.

The easy way to make a Smurf hat

I made Smurf hat from a piece of white fleece that I had in my scraps box.  I really like working with fleece  because it will keep her warm when trick-or-treating, the edges don't fray so it doesn't need to be serged and it's got some stretch to it. ( The hat fits my 10 year old and me)

You will need:
  • White(or red for Papa) fleece(I had 2 pieces 14" X 14")
  • matching thread
  • straight pins
  • paper and a pencil to draw your pattern
  • a hat that fits your child to use for the template.
 1. Place the hat on a piece of paper and make a  pattern for your Smurf hat. (I just free handed it) Make sure to leave an extra 1/2" or so for a seam allowance.
2. Double up your fabric (you will cut 2 pieces at once) pin the pattern to the fleece and cut.
3. Sew both pieces together leaving  1/2" seam allowance
 4.  Put a few clips in the curve so the hat will lay properly(as shown in picture above )

5.  Stuff the front of the hat with batting.  I'm going to glue a flower on the hat because after all, it is Smurfette!
I am so please with how the hat turned out.  My daughter has worn it everyday when she gets home and watches the Smurfs!

I also made a Smurfette dress out of an old pair of curtains but any dress or a man's white dress shirt will do.  I even added a blue pom pom tail to the back.  She has a blue long sleeve shirt, blue pants and white shoes she will be wearing to complete the costume.  Isn't it cute?

Budget Meal, Beef Vegetable soup

Did you know that I also blog for General Mills on LifeMadeDelicious.ca?  Here is one of my latest recipes for beef veggie soup(your way).
One of my favourite meals to eat is homemade beef veggie soup. Eating it is one of those aaahhh moments that I love at the end of a busy day. We relax and talk about our day around the dinner table while eating comfort food.

I remember my grandparents always having a pot of soup on the back burner of the stove in the winter. With having 6 kids and many grandkids they never knew who was popping by so they were always prepared.

I make my soup like my Nana did, with ingredients I have on hand. Once when eating soup at my grandparent’s house I got the tab from the top of the rice box in my bowl of soup. I still laugh about it because we use to say, “You never know what’s going to be in Nana’s soup!” But all kidding aside, her soup was always great.

To make the soup broth place 3-4 meaty beef soup bones on a baking sheet and sprinkle with herbs (I like thyme) garlic, salt and pepper. Roast the bones for 45 minutes to 1 hour until they turn brown and the meat is cooked. I custom order my beef from a local farm and get the butcher to leave a good amount of meat on the bones so I don’t need to add any additional meat to the soup.

Fill a Dutch oven pot 3/4 full with water and add the roasted soup bones, bay leaves, thyme, onion, garlic, carrots, celery, salt and pepper. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. I leave the pot 1/2 covered for about 3-4 hours until the stock is reduced and full of great flavour.
Now, to make the soup. If your soup bones were fatty I would recommend refrigerating the stock overnight and skimming the fat off the next day when it solidifies. I find the veggies used to make the broth too mushy and the kids don't like the texture so I remove them and add fresh. Next, cut the meat from the bones and add it back to the pot with the broth.
Remember this is beef veggie soup your way so add what ever veggies your family likes. For my soup I added:
1 large can of tomatoes, peppers, carrots, celery, frozen peas, frozen green beans, frozen corn, onions, garlic and ¼ cup of barley.
Let the veggies simmer with the broth and meat for at least 35 minutes (check to make sure the barley is cooked)
When it's time to serve I add either cooked brown rice, cooked whole wheat macaroni, or cooked meat filled tortellini.
Serve with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese and either biscuits or a crusty baguette. As you can see from the picture above my kids wanted cheese quesadillas on the side!
