Smart Source Canada Printable Coupons

PhotobucketIf you have been checking out my blog this week you may have noticed something a bit different. I am very please to announce that I have added the  SmartSource.ca coupon printer!  If you click on the Coupons/Freebies tab above then Printable Coupons you will see the latest and greatest printable Smart Source coupons available.

Most of us are familiar with Smart Source as a coupon insert in our local newspapers.  It's distributed to 10 million households throughout Canada 16 times per year. That's a lot of coupons!!

For years I have been so envious of the US version SmartSouce.com because they offered some pretty great coupons. Welcome to Canada SmartSource.ca, we have been waiting for you!

"Six months after launching, Canada’s premier site for printable coupons, SmartSource.ca, has re-shaped the Canadian online couponing environment.  In only half a year, the site has offered consumers more than $3 million in savings on everyday items from trusted brands. The website offers a wide range of savings opportunities on brands including Advil, Cheerios, Huggies, Irish Spring, Splenda and Twinings.  The coupons, which are updated weekly, have ranged from $.50 off a box of Kleenex Cool Touch Tissue to $5.00 off Airwick products."

Do you hunt for coupons?

Are you an avid couponer like me? I always have my eye open for coupons when I'm out shopping. My kids are well trained to scope out coupons too!

Yesterday I was out to pick up a few things at Shoppers while the kids were at Girl Guides.  I had an extra 20 minutes to waste so I put those minutes to good use and headed over to Metro!

I`m glad I stopped because they had some new coupons out.  I was looking for Bick's coupons and low and behold there they were!

Here`s what I found:
75 cents B/D Cheese strings or Fun Cheese (8-16's) exp Dec 31/2012
$1 Febreeze (any fabric refresher, any size!) exp July 31,2012
$1 WUB2 any Bick's products exp Dec 31/2012
$2 Dove VisibleCare Body Wash exp Dec 31/2012

There was also a coupon for Nutrigrain bars (50cents) but I didn't grab it as we don't like these. What I was really on the hunt for was a rebate form for the Dare promotion where you buy 5 products and get a $15 gift card back.  Oh well, I'll check back next week!

Taking Care of the Nasty #FinishRevolution

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I HATE DOING DISHES. This puts me in quite a predicament since I love to cook! Needles to say, my stainless steel, tall tub Bosch dishwasher is my most used (and most loved) appliance. On an average day it usually runs twice, if I am baking a lot sometimes three times!
For my second Finish Quantum post I was asked to put it to the test. Well, I'm game for that! Easter was just a few days away and I was going to have a lot of really dirty, greasy, sticky, baked on dishes. On the menu was homemade cranberry sauce, honey glazed ham, stuffing, scalloped potatoes and mixed veg.

Here is the aftermath of the delicious meal-
I told everyone we could have dessert once things were cleaned up. Since there was a goal in site, the table was cleared, dishes put in the dishwasher and table was wiped clean in only ten minutes.   I like letting Finish Quantum do the work for me; I really do!
Mmmm, yummy Easter bunny cake
I was anticipating what I would find when I opened up the dishwasher.  Voila, all clean.  Even the casserole dish with baked on scalloped potatoes, which usually  needs to soak for a day, was sparkly clean.

Would you like to try Finish Quantum for free?  Visit the Finish Canada Facebook page , "Like" it then click on "special offers".  From here print out your mail in rebate form.*

*Purchase any one (1) FINISH QUANTUM Product and receive up to $8.49 refund by mail. Limit one (1) per household. To receive your refund by
mail, complete the Official Refund Form. Purchases must be made between April 14, 2012 and May 4, 2012. All requests for refunds must be received on or before June 4, 2012. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

HOT>> P&G Beauty Samples available

p&G free samples brandsampler

P&G has a Beauty and Grooming Sample pack available now. Hurry over and get yours because these go fast!
The site is s..l..o..w.. right now so be patient.

I got to choose 3 of 4 samples.  I chose Pantene aqua light shampoo and conditioner, Olay Regenerist creme, and a venus razor.  The other choice was a men's Proglide razor.

Update April19th (am) I'm guessing the site is undergoing maintenance because of all the people trying to order these samples.  It was ridiculously slow yesterday.  Right now it says that samples will be available in early April.  I imagine if they didn't have any samples left they would have put a message saying so.  Check back today, you may get lucky!

My Blog is worth more than a Frozen Pizza Part 1

Are you a blogger? Have you been bombarded lately with offers from companies who want you to work for them for FREE?

First off, who the H.E. Double hockey sticks works for free? I couldn't imagine approaching a company or business and saying to them,"Can you do this for me? And by the way, I won't be paying you."

Have you ever been approached by a company who wants you to run a giveaway and do a review of their product in exchange for, oh let's say A frozen pizza? A review/ giveaway requires-
  • Usually a few emails/phone calls to discuss the post/ giveaway with the company
  • Use the product so you can review it (allow for cooking time, ect)
  • Write about the product and giveaway  including links and images you have uploaded and sized
  • Spread the word (multiple times)about your giveaway by posting to Twitter, Facebook and find  giveaway linky's to promote your giveaway.
  • Go through and post the comments (entries)
  • pick a winner
  • notify the winner, wait for them to get back to you
  • notify company of the winner
I think a fair estimate would be 4-5 hours work for a review post and to run a giveaway.  Your $5 pizza is the equivalent of working for $1 an hour! Did I use to work with companies like this?  Sure, when I first started but now I realize that my time is worth a lot more than that.  You should set a price that you are comfortable with and ask for it.  I think if we all started doing this we would get less and less requests for us (Bloggers) to work for free.

Yesterday I received seven emails BEFORE lunch, from companies wanting me to talk about their products/ services/companies/events ect. for free.  Great isn't it?  If they are asking me to write about their company or product, add keywords and links than that's advertising and it's not free.

I've even been interviewed my a major newspaper and they only included my name in the article not my blog website which felt like a kick in the can. If you are not being paid for your interview/opinions at the very least they can include the link to your website!   It makes me wonder why the heck I'm doing this if my time, and effort are not worth them paying for.

Some( but not all) companies are so off the mark with what a blog or a woman's influence is worth. I think there comes a time when a blogger needs to evaluate their blog, the income from it and the hours put into it. I know when I first started I put in more then a full work week reading about blog design, SEO, key words and good ol' HTML (computer speak)

I  have received a few emails from people asking me quick ways to make  money from blogging because they were thinking about starting a blog.  Um..hello?  You are going about it all wrong. I didn't even put any form of ads on my blog the first year.  Things you need to do first are
  • Start  a blog
  • Find your niche
  • network
  • write good, helpful content
  • Be indexed by Google, Yahoo ect
  • Get a loyal following
When I started my blog back in 2009 it was to share coupon and sale info with friends and family and it quickly grew from there.  Back then average unique readers would be about 60 per day.  The second year I reached over 100 readers a few times (which I thought was pretty good) Then I experienced an overnight growth in readers to almost 3000 visitors per day due to the TLC Extreme Couponing show.  To this day, the post I wrote about TLC Extreme Couponing in April 2011 is still the most popular post that is read on my blog.  As my blog became more popular, especially during the height of the Extreme Couponing craze I probably almost doubled my work load just trying to answer all of the emails I was getting.

Of course I knew that the craze would die off, and it did.  I  now get about seven to eight thousand visits per month. Has income died off, well yes it has. For instance, yesterday I put in 5 hours of work writing up a few posts, searching around for deals and took care of some  phone calls and emails from readers and companies.  Grand total for yesterday was less then that $5 pizza I mentioned above.

Do you know about the different ways a blogger can make money?  I'll be talking about that next in part 2

Freebies, Cheapies and Money Makers

Did you know that Finish Quantum had a rebate for in the Smart Source Flyer that came out a few days ago? If you missed it don't fret! Finish Canada is also offering a printable rebate form via their Facebook page. Visit the Finish Canada page, "Like" it and click on "Special offers" to get your rebate form.

The rebate Deets:
The rebate says Free Finish Quantum 20ct.  I have seen them retail anywhere from $4.99-$7.99.  BUT the rebate form also says, "Purchase ANY  Finish Quantum products and receive up to $8.49 to cover the cost of product plus taxes and postage."

Purchases must be made between April 14-May 4/2012.  All rebate requests must be received by June 4/2012.

Here's what I'm doing!  Zehrs has the 48 pack of Finish Quantum on sale for $11.99.  They also have $1.50 coupons for Finish Quantum on their Coupon Zone coupon board.
$11.99+13%=13.55 - $1.50 coupon = $12.04 - Mail in rebate max(8.49) and tax(1.10)= $2.45
If I have my calculations correct out of pocket should be $2.45 for the 48 pack which usually retails for around $15.  Finish is even going to refund you the postage, bonus!

McDonald's $1 snack size real fruit smoothies starting tomorrow (April 16) and ending April 22nd.  I had a sample of the mango pineapple smoothie last year in San Diego at BlogHer '11.  It was REALLY good!  I haven't visited a Mc D's in years so I'm not sure what flavors they offer.  Looks like it could be mango pineapple, strawberry banana and mixed berry.

What's MSCM picking up at the Grocery Store?

I get asked often exactly HOW I shop so here's a break down of my money saving strategy! I've posted before about my stockpiling of goods I use back in November.

Take stock of what you have once a month so you know what you have and what you need.

Here's a bit of an update about what I've got on hand right now and what I'm going to be looking for in the next few months to add to my stockpile pantry.

Here's what's in pantry #1.  I'll be looking at add:
4 penne and 4 macaroni (the kid's love pasta salad in the summer)
2 egg noodles
4 whole wheat cous cous ( salad again, we love it)
Ziploc bags- 3 large freezer, 3 med freezer, 2 sandwich bags, 2 snack size bags
Red hot-2 bottles (like the commercial says," We put the &h%t on everything")
Tomato soup- about 12 cans should get me through the next year.  Metro has buy 4 save $1 coupons
Heinz beans- if on sale for less then 70 cents per can I'll grab 1 dozen tomato and 1 dozen maple
Garbanzo beans- 6 cans for hummus
Diced tomatoes- 6 cans
Ragu- on sale for $1 this week, I'll grab 4-6 jars
Uncle Ben's brown rice (large bag) I've got 2 left and go through about 1 per month.  I'll get 2
Light tuna- I've only got 2 cans left so 8-10 should do for a while.  We like tuna sandwiches.

Pantry #2
I've got several boxes of cereal so unless I get FPC I'm not going to need any for a while
Premium plus crackers- 1 or 2 boxes
Jams- I make my own so no need to buy
Hair mousse and hair spray-Herbal essence is on for $1.99 this week and I have 50 cent coupons.  I'll get 2 of each and that should last 3-4 months
If I find a good deal on dishwasher soap I'll pick some up.  We need about 50-60 loads worth per month.  Yes, you have a lot of dirty dishes and pans when you cook mostly from scratch!
Jet dry turbo-1 large bottle
Coffee- 3 large cans.  Max is on sale this week for $6.99.  I'd hate to run out and pay $13.99 per can!
large bottles of water- a few more. We have a well so if the hydro goes out we have no well pump=no water.  I like to have several on hand, just in case.
Oasis juice 1 LT carton- I've got 4 and it's on sale this week for 99 cents.  The kids drink about 4-5 a month so I'll grab 8 and I won't have to buy it for a couple months.

About Bread  I have been purchasing the Chalet bread from Dollarama.  I know, dollar store bread?  It's really fresh, they get it in three times a week and it's $1 a loaf.  If I'm out at WalMart I'll grab their bakery bread they bake in house.  It's 97 cents a loaf.  The only thing is you have to get them to slice it and it takes forever.  I just waited about 10 minuets to get 3 loaves sliced last week.

In the freezer-
We purchased 1/4 of a naturally raised cow from a local farm in September.  I've got several ground beef, eight 2lb packs of stewing beef, a 4 lb prime rib roast, one 3 lb pot roast, 4 beef shanks, and 2 rib steaks left.  I'll order another quarter in September at a cost of  $2.89 per pound(if the prices haven't increased)  I know grocery store ground beef sometimes goes on sale for $1.99/lb but this is sooo much better.  When I cook it there is no weird ground beef smell like the grocery store kind or grease to drain from the pan.

We purchased half  of a naturally raised  hog (60lbs) from a local farm in January 2011. I'll order another 1/2 hog this month since we all really like BBQ sausage and pork chops in the summer.  I think we paid around $2 a pound so another 1/2 should be between $120-$150 and it will last several months.

I purchase chicken on sale when it is $2.99/lb for the boneless skinless.  I have 8 breasts in the freezer right now that I vacuum seal 2 breasts to a bag.  Chicken is on sale this week so I'll grab one or 2 family packs at an average cost of $13-16 per pack.

You know what's awesome?  I cashed in some  Airmiles points for 2 metro gift cards (2 x $20) and I just got them in the mail yesterday.  I love stocking the pantry for free!  If I have enough points when Shoppers has their bonus redemption days I'll pick up things like rice, canned milk, band aids and toiletries.

Great deals I picked up this morning at the grocery store!

  • Gay Lea spreadable butter- Sale at Sobeys $1.99/ half pound and I have $1 coupons.I picked up 6, They freeze well
  • No Name baked beans- I hit the Jack pot!   Zehrs has their store brand baked beans for 75 cents/can and they have 15 cent coupons on the shelf.  I picked up 10 and since they don't expire for almost 3 years I'll pick up a dozen more later this week because I've got room for them and it's something the kids LOVE.
  • Knorr sidekicks- This isn't something we eat on a regular basis but they come in handy on a busy night and they now have less sodium.  I picked up 8 for 99 cents at Zehrs and had b3g1free coupons =  75 cents each
  • Max coffee- large cans at Zehrs $6.99
  • Metro Mccain pizza 2 pack $5.47
  • Ham at Sobeys was marked down half price and they were still good for a few days. I picked up 2 and put them in the freezer.
  • Aurthers smoothies 1/2 price @ sobeys-still good for 1 1/2 weeks $2.25
  • 3 cans of tuna at Shoppers on sale 99 cents/can
Now I need to go and put this all away {sigh}

I'm Cheap, but not an Extreme Cheapskate

Yes, I'm cheap, frugal, penny-wise, whatever you want to call it.  I try to live by the saying,"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

This is so true of my poor coffee maker.  We have a few coffee makers, an espresso maker I bought on clearance at Sears, a  Bosch Tassimo I got for free when attending an event back before I started this blog and a cheap Black & Decker coffee maker.

This is the pathetic story of my old Black and Decker.  We purchased this pot about 5 years ago at Canadian tire.  I think it was about $30.  A couple years ago the top of the pot snapped off.  I was checking the flyers and no coffee makers were on sale that week. Sooo... I kept using the pot, brewing it into a 4 cup glass measuring cup.

I was cleaning out the basement a few days later and found a glass coffee carafe from an old coffee pot.  I thought I would use it until I could find a coffee maker I liked on sale.  Two years came and went, same black coffee pot, same white glass carafe.  Then the sucker up and died on me this week!  I shouldn't have been shocked, I have been meaning to replace it for the past 2 years, but it was still working.  We definitely made it do and wore it out!

I pulled out the flyers and once again, none on sale.  Am I cursed?  Give me a break, I NEED coffee to function. Later that day I was out running a few errands and ran into Bed, Bath and Beyond to look for a clothes bin for my new laundry room.  As I was walking through the store I though I would check out the coffee makers but wasn't expecting to find anything in my price range.  Then I saw it!  Isn't it a beaut?
This was a marked down display unit.  Regular price $79.99 marked down to $39.97!  Here's the best part.  I just signed up on the BBB website and they sent me a 20% off coupon.  After taxes I paid $36.13.  Here's hoping I can get a good five years out of this one!  Pass the Baily's cream please :o)
